Rooftop solar in Kerala for NRIs can be arranged entirely from the Gulf. With Wartens Energy, an engineer surveys the roof on a WhatsApp video call with your family, you receive a fixed price as a PDF, you pay in online milestones as work progresses, and you get photo updates at every installation stage (Wartens Energy). A family member at home only needs to open the gate and be the local contact.
This post walks through the process step by step, what your family needs to do, what you can do from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Muscat, and the questions to ask any installer before you send money.
Why NRIs are putting solar on the family home
Three reasons come up again and again. Electricity bills at the family home have risen as households add air conditioners and appliances. Parents want fewer power interruptions. And the national PM Surya Ghar scheme pays a subsidy on residential rooftop systems, which shortens the payback. By October 2026 the scheme had passed 60 lakh households and 17,855 MW of rooftop capacity nationally (Angel One).
How rooftop solar in Kerala for NRIs works, step by step
- Enquiry from the Gulf. Share the home's location, a recent KSEB bill and photos of the roof.
- Video site survey. An engineer joins a WhatsApp video call with a family member at the house, checks the roof, shading, the meter and the space for the inverter.
- Fixed PDF quote. You receive a written price for the agreed system, with components and the payment schedule.
- Paperwork. Wartens Energy handles PM Surya Ghar registration, KSEB net-metering paperwork and bank loan documents if you need them (Wartens Energy).
- Milestone payments online. You pay in stages as work progresses, not everything up front.
- Installation with photo updates. Structure, panels, wiring, inverter and earthing are photographed at each stage and sent to you.
- Inspection and net meter. KSEB inspects and the net meter is installed before the system exports to the grid.
- Monitoring. Optional live dashboard and WhatsApp alerts, so you can see generation from the Gulf.

What your family at home needs to do
Very little, but it matters. Someone must be at the house for the video survey and on installation days, sign where KSEB needs a signature, and keep the consumer number and bill handy. Decide early whose name is on the electricity connection, because the subsidy application is made against that consumer number. If the connection is in a parent's name, they are usually the applicant. Our PM Surya Ghar guide for NRIs covers this in detail.
On installation days the team needs roof access, a place to store panels safely overnight and a short power shutdown when the inverter is connected. Agree a date that suits your parents, and ask for the crew leader's phone number so your family has one person to call. Most home systems are installed within a few days once materials are on site.
Which system suits a typical Kerala home
Wartens Energy offers on-grid systems in 2, 3 and 5 kW for homes, a hybrid option with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery backup, and a battery add-on for existing systems (Wartens Energy). Size depends on monthly units, not on roof area alone. As a starting point, published guidance links 150 to 300 units a month to a 2 to 3 kW system (Outlook Money). If the house has frequent power cuts or elderly parents who rely on fans and medical devices, read our on-grid vs hybrid comparison.

Watch on YouTubeQuestions to ask any installer before you pay
- Is the installer a registered vendor on the PM Surya Ghar national portal?
- Is the price fixed in writing, including structure, cabling, earthing, net-meter work and KSEB fees?
- Which panel and inverter models, and what warranties, in writing?
- How are payments split, and what triggers each milestone?
- Who handles KSEB inspection and the net meter, and how long does it usually take?
- Who maintains the system after installation, and how do you raise a fault from abroad?
Paying safely from abroad
Milestone payments protect both sides, but only if each milestone is tied to something you can see. A sensible split links the first payment to the confirmed design and material order, the next to delivery of panels and structure to the house, the next to completed installation shown in photos, and the last to KSEB inspection and commissioning.
- Pay by bank transfer to the company account named on the quote, never to an individual.
- Ask for a receipt or invoice for every milestone.
- Keep the quote, invoices, warranty cards and commissioning papers in one shared folder your family can also open.
- Do not release the final payment until the system is commissioned and you have seen generation in the monitoring app.
After installation: care from a distance
Panels need cleaning, especially before and after the monsoon, and inverters occasionally trip. Wartens Care covers maintenance, cleaning and repairs for any installer's system, and Wartens Monitor sends WhatsApp alerts if generation drops. Check generation monthly against the previous year; a sudden fall usually means shading, dirt or an inverter fault rather than failed panels.
Wartens Energy serves Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode and Wayanad from its team in Iritty, with our Abu Dhabi office in Mohamed Bin Zayed City as a Gulf contact. See our energy systems service, check the cost and payback guide, or book a video survey.
